What is Olive Oil?

Olive oil is a key ingredient in Spanish and Mediterranean cooking. Olive oil is made by pressing freshly picked olives to extract the liquid from the fruit.

Packed with flavour, olive oil is incredibly versatile making it perfect for everything from salad dressings to frying, roasting, baking, and more. Once you start using olive oil regularly, you’ll wonder how you ever cooked without it!

History of Olive Oil

The modern olive tree originated in the regions of Mesopotamia and Persia. Large-scale olive oil production began as far back as the Minoan civilisation in Ancient Greece, around 4000 BC. It then spread to Ancient Greece before being planted throughout the Roman Empire along the Mediterranean.

In ancient times, the olive tree was a powerful symbol of cultural heritage. Olive wreaths were even awarded to victors in the ancient Olympic Games! The uses for olive oil were also incredibly varied, ranging from cooking and beauty treatments to religious ceremonies.

Today, olives are grown in many parts of the world, including Australia, and their popularity continues to rise — thanks to their rich flavour and many health benefits.

Our Varieties

Extra Virgin Olive Oils

When it comes to kitchen essentials, extra virgin olive oil stands out for its rich, distinctive flavour. At La Española, we’re proud to offer a wide selection of extra virgin olive oil, each suited to different cooking styles.

Whether you choose our classic Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Gourmet Extra Virgin Olive Oil, or Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil, you’ll be adding depth and character to everything from salad dressings to everyday meals.

Concerned about smoke points? There’s no need. Recent studies show that smoke point alone isn’t the best way to judge a cooking oil’s suitability. During cooking, heat is absorbed and spread across all ingredients, so the oil itself rarely reaches temperatures high enough to cause concern. That means our extra virgin olive oils are just as versatile as any other – the real difference lies in the flavour.

Everyday Olive Oils

For a more subtle taste, our Classic Olive Oil and Mild & Light Olive Oil are excellent choices. Their gentle flavour lets your ingredients shine, making them ideal for a wide range of recipes. They’re especially handy when baking, where a more neutral oil helps balance sweet and savoury elements.

Oil Blends and Other Options

If you enjoy experimenting in the kitchen, why not explore our range of specialty oils?

Looking for a healthier, neutral-flavoured oil? Our Grapeseed Oil is a brilliant alternative. It’s light in taste, nutrient-rich, and perfect when you want the oil to support – not overpower – your dish.

For those special finishing touches, elevate your meals with our Extra Virgin Olive Oil infused with White Truffle. With earthy, slightly floral notes, it’s a favourite among chefs and adds a gourmet twist to everything from pasta and pizza to your favourite salads!
