Ten Food Trends To Watch For In 2022

2021-12-27

The year is almost over, and we give you a sneak preview of the gastronomic trends that will be all the rage in 2022. If you are not yet a no coffee user and you don't know the multiple uses of olive oil... this is the article for you

Here at La Española Olive Oil, we love food and we love keeping up with the most popular food trends.

As we dive headfirst into a New Year, we’ve taken a look at the food trends that will be hot in 2022, and where you can give them a go in Australia.

1.    Non-traditional bread

A lot of people aim to cut down on their bread intake each year, whether it’s due to a diagnosed gluten intolerance or just the desire to eat less carbs and consume less gluten.

Bread that isn’t really bread is hot in the world of food. Gluten free bread is now widely available, and wheat-free bread variations like potato bread and chickpea bread will be big in 2022

2.    Plant-based meat

More and more people are attempting to eat a more plant-based diet both for their health and for the planet, and more and more plant-based meats are now available on the market. Many of these taste virtually identical to regular meat.

Vegetable protein from peas, mushrooms and wheat plus soy often are used to mimic the consistency and taste of meat.

Are you on the plant-based train?

3.    Dairy-free milk

Since we wrote our blog on dairy-free milk varieties and taste-tested them, the industry of non-milk milk has boomed!

Even more dairy-free milk varieties have popped up on shelves this year, including potato milk, rice milk and cashew milk.

The move away from regular cows milk is gaining momentum and is an industry to watch in the New Year. Will you be dairy-free in 2022?

4.    Seltzer

You may have seen seltzer, traditionally an American term, available more widely on Aussie shelves.

So what is seltzer? In short, it is light, sparkling spirits (usually vodka) with fruity flavours like berries, lemon or lime. It is often also called hard-seltzer in the USA.

Now seltzers are widely available on bottle shop shelves in pre-mixed varieties that are sure to be big business over the hot Australian summer. Yum!

5.    Harissa

Harissa is tipped to be a big food trend in 2022

Originating in Tunisia, the paste is often used in dips or marinades, and is made with everyday ingredients like chilli, vinegar, garlic and olive oil.

The taste is smoky and peppery, varies from mild to hot and you can make your own at home easily. Alternatively, many condiment brands are now producing their own harissa to keep up with demand.

6.    Botanical drinks

The plant-based food industry has now merged into plant-based drinks, and 2022 will be a huge year for botanical-infused drinks. Many alcoholic spirits are already available in botanical varieties like infused gin, but many health businesses are now producing alcohol-free botanical drinks like botanical punch, lavender gin and mint virgin cocktails.

Herbs and spices are packed with health benefits, and we’re down to drink them!

7.    Bone broth

Those in the health industries have been raving about bone broth for years, but now the popularity of bone broth has spilled into the mainstream.

Bone broth is a broth made from animal bones, and is now commercially available as well as easily made at home. You can drink it straight, make soup with it or even freeze it for later.

Bone broth has so many health benefits. It supports gut and digestive health, improves immune function and sleep, helps weight loss and is packed with many nutrients your body needs.

8.    All-rounder olive oil uses

Olive oil has been used in the kitchen for thousands of years, but it has been a beauty staple for as long. Olive oil is now widely available in beauty products, but is also the ideal ingredient for DIY beauty products at home. Use olive oil in face masks, hair treatments, as a nourishing hand and nail moisturiser and more!

Here at La Española Olive Oil we love all things olive oil, and on our blog and social media we don’t just share all kinds of fascinating info on olive oil uses in the kitchen, but in beauty products as well. Follow us so you don’t miss any!

9.    Alternative sweeteners

Can’t say no to a spoonful of sugar in your coffee? Alternative sugars are gaining momentum and these natural sweeteners can be easily switched to in 2022.

Ideal for if you’re actively trying to cut down your sugar consumption and eat better in the New Year, alternative sweeteners include coconut sugar, date paste, agave syrup, maple syrup, honey and stevia.

Each natural sweetener differs in calories and health benefits, but most have far less calories than actual sugar plus added vitamins and nutrients you need for better health.

10.    Non-coffee coffee

It’s so hard to give up that strong, creamy coffee first thing in the morning, but non-coffee coffees are one of the biggest food trends right now and will only grow in popularity in 2022.

Varieties now available include mushroom coffee, chicory coffee, golden milk (a coffee substitute made from things like ginger and turmeric), chai powder, cacao espresso and more.

Coffee alternatives are low on caffeine, and if cutting your caffeine intake is high on your resolutions list, these are for you.

Many people are apprehensive before trying these coffee alternatives, but are surprised to find how much they love them.
