The best bread alternatives to try this year

2022-02-17

Looking for the best alternative to traditional bread? Try these alternatives, with healthy ingredients and very easy to cook.

It’s hard to give up bread. It’s delicious, rich in carbs and can be used in so many delicious ways.

But for many of us, whether for dietary reasons or simply to eat healthier, giving up traditional bread is on our list of food goals.

But don’t panic! Just because you’re trying to eat less wheat flour bread doesn’t mean that you have to give up the good stuff entirely!

There’s a range of bread alternatives on the market now that are just as delicious as regular bread - and many are healthier for you too! Health aside, they are all delicious to simply try as something new.

We have also included a recipe for each bread alternative listed below for those who want to bake up a storm in their own kitchen!

Chickpea bread

Chickpea bread isn’t a new food trend. It has been a staple of Turkish and Albanian cuisine for generations. Traditional chickpea bread differs from normal bread as it isn’t made with regular flour, but chickpea flour and chickpea yeast. The end result is baked bread that tastes smooth and doughy.

There is also a gluten-free chickpea flatbread called “socca” that is the perfect savoury snack to bake. Also called “farinata”, it is a very popular French bread that is now popular across the Mediterranean.

Here is a delicious gluten-free chickpea bread recipe.

Potato bread

Potato bread has had cultural variations across the world for centuries. Brazil has their own variety, as well as Germany, Ireland, the USA and many more nations. Potato bread is made in a similar fashion to chickpea bread in that it replaces wheat flour, this time with potatoes or potato flour. Each country that makes potato bread prepares it a little differently. Some bake other foods into it, some fry it, some bake it, some braid it, some are served like scones, some like loaves and so on.

The resulting taste depends on the recipe you use, with some recipes sweeter and some more savoury. In general, potato bread is light and fluffy, but generally has the same amount of carbohydrates as regular bread. However potato bread is gluten-free.

Pumpkin bread

Pumpkin bread is made using pumpkin instead of wheat flour, and depending on the recipe you use, the end result can differ. Some recipes incorporate spices like nutmeg and cinnamon, which give it the perfect autumnal taste. Others add nuts, like some banana bread recipes. Pumpkin bread is usually cooked in a loaf pan, and is delicious served warm out of the oven.

Bare in mind that most pumpkin bread recipes are high in cholesterol and saturated fats and still usually contains self-raising flour. So this isn’t a bread alternative to switch to if you’re aiming to eat healthy this year.

Almond flour bread

A number of bread alternatives use almond flour in place of regular wheat flour. It is disease-fighting, and high in antioxidants, iron and other good things. It is low in carbs and rich in healthy fats, and most almond flour bread recipes are keto and paleo-friendly as well as gluten-free.

The end result of most almond flour bread recipes is a dense, nutty bread that pairs well with other flavours like vanilla.
